“Zeitsprung” Open-air Museum, Klinge

The ”Zeitsprung“ open-air museum is located on a former excavation site near the future Lake Klinger See, currently in the process of being flooded. Between 1985 to 2003, Eemian Warm Period sea deposits from the Pleistocene era were examined here in a geological-palaeontological excavation site. The most important finding was that of an almost completely preserved mammoth skeleton – the first to be discovered in Germany. The site is now a nature conservation area and can be visited as part of the museum. Among other things, the museum explains the individual sedimentary layers, and objects from the Eemian deposits are on display. A replica of the baby mammoth, the bones of which are on display in the Natural History Museum in Berlin, is on show in a small shelter. A viewing platform provides a magnificent view of the future Lake Klinger See, currently being formed by flooding the Jänschwalde surface mine.
Guided tours are available on request. Entrance fees are not charged, but donations are welcome.
