Lake Erikasee
If you are looking for some peace and quiet, Lake Erikasee is the right place for you. It is located near the historical garden cities of Lauta-Nord and Erika (Laubusch), which were built in the early 20th century. These picturesque towns are two historical gems of the Lusatian Lakeland. The former mining area is now a popular destination for nature walks and bicycle tours, even though the lake and its banks are not accessible due to landslide risk and will remain closed off for the foreseeable future.
The lake was created on the site of the former Erika pit of the Laubusch mine. It was named after the daughter of a shareholder of the mining company ILSE-Bergbau AG. Until 1962, this site was the main source of supply for the Laubusch briquette factory and, by extension, also the power station and the aluminium works in Lauta. The flooding of Erika pit was completed in 1970. The landscape surrounding the lake is a special habitat for rare indigenous animal species. Lake Erikasee forms part of the Lusatian Lakeland nature conservation project.
Once the mining engineering work to ensure ground stability is completed and access restrictions are lifted, the lake is intended to be approved for water tourism from after 2025.
