Lake Knappensee
Lake Knappensee is one of the oldest man-made lakes in the Lusatian Lakeland. Its creation commenced in 1945 with the uncontrolled flooding of the Werminghoff I open-cast mine. Swimmers, water sports enthusiasts and long-stay campers have been coming to Lake Knappensee since the 1960s. Surrounded by extensive woodland and heaths, the lake quickly became a popular place of recreation, fondly referred to as the ‘little Baltic Sea’. Since 2014, Lake Knappensee has been closed off for mining reclamation work. The goal is to see non-motorised boats, swimmers and sunbathers return to the lake and its beaches once it is reopened for public use. Tourism facilities and accommodation in the area will be restructured based on new plans.
The 8-kilometre-long lake circuit is currently unusable due to the designation of geotechnical restricted areas.
