Calauer Schweiz Observation Tower
The wooden predecessor building, which opened in 1999, was a popular destination for tourist hikes in the Calauer Schweiz region. It was a well-known landmark of the surrounding "Plins” villages of Gosda, Zwietow and Weißag, famous for their “Plins” or buckwheat. A decision to demolish it was taken in 2014 due to structural damage and vandalism. The decision to demolish the tower gave rise to a desire to build a replacement. The municipality of Luckaitztal also approached the town of Calau and found further support for the project.
The new tower was built about 400 metres north-east of the old site on a higher site within the nature reserve. A plot of land was acquired by the August Bier Foundation for this new site by the municipality of Luckaitztal. This new site now provides an excellent panoramic view of the region. After a construction period of one year, the observation tower was handed over to the public as the new landmark of the Calauer Schweiz in 2020.
