Nochten Boulder Park – unique in Europe
The Lusatian Lakeland is undergoing a fascinating transformation from barren lunar landscape into colourful oases of nature. It is an impressive example of the successful recultivation of terrain left behind by the lignite mining industry, and unique in Europe.
Around 7,000 boulders left over from the last ice age are draped across lush green hills and shallow valleys, and along streams and small waterfalls. Unearthed by the former opencast mines, the boulders accentuate the artfully designed landscape. Thanks to its wonderfully colourful park areas, a visit to Nochten Boulder Park is a memorable experience at any time of the year, and the wide range of shapes and colours on show draw in the crowds from far and wide. Between 2000 and 2003, a unique 20 hectare landscaped park was created on the reclaimed footprint of an opencast mine. The park has many surprising topographical formations and impressive stone monuments, and throughout the seasons it displays virtually the entire colour spectrum of native and exotic flora.
Younger visitors can look forward to adventures in the desert play area, complete with splash fountains and a sand pit in which treasures have been hidden, while the ‘Little Scandinavia’ educational trail provides fascinating facts about the boulders’ origins. The fully accessible visitor centre hosts events and film screenings, and is the perfect place to stop off for a coffee. Plants and souvenirs are on sale in the shop.
