Lake Bergen is located in the Sperrgebiet (restricted area) and emerged from the former Südostschlauch opencast mine in the Spreetal opencast field. It fills up by itself due to groundwater recharge. The lake water level has been artificially lowered since 2015. Due to the numerous shallow water zones and islands, it is an important resting place for migratory birds such as cranes, northern geese and waders. Furthermore, rare bird species such as the fallow pipit, sandpiper, lapwing, little ringed plover, whinchat and bluethroat breed there. Lake Bergen is part of the Lusatian Lakeland nature conservation project. In the protected post-mining landscape, it is ensured that certain plant and animal species develop.
The future navigability of the lake is subordinate to nature conservation concerns. Motorboats are not permitted
At present, Lake Bergen cannot be used for tourism due to the large-scale closures. Lake Bergen is to be connected to Lake Neuwies and Lake Sabrod via canals. The connection within Lake Bergen must be re-established.
