Koschen Canal and lock
The navigable Koschen Canal links Lake Senftenberg and Lake Geierswalde. Around 1,000 metres long, it crosses underneath a main road and a river (the Schwarze Elster). Signs, traffic lights and information boards ensure safe and efficient use of the canal. The difference in height between the two lakes means a lock is necessary. The lock is operated automatically, although a lock keeper is sometimes present and can intervene manually if required. The inside of the lock chamber measures 29m x 6m.
It takes approximately 15 minutes to pass through the lock, and around 50 minutes to get from one end of the canal to the other.
Please read the instructions and guidance here BEFORE using the lock.
The canal is open to all types of watercraft but it is important to remember that they must be no more than 6 metres wide, 3.5 metres tall and 29 metres long. Sailing boats must be able to fold down their masts.
