Which lakes are connected by a navigable waterway?
Three lakes are connected at present. The Koschen Canal (link 12) connects Lake Senftenberg to Lake Geierswalde. The canal is 1,050m long and was opened on 1 June 2013. The construction of a lock means that the difference in water levels between the two lakes is no longer an obstacle to passage. The canal crosses beneath a main road (the B96) and the diverted river, the Schwarze Elster.
The Barbara Canal between Lake Geierswalde and Lake Partwitz opened in 2019 and can be used by boats.
Eventually, a total of ten lakes are going to be linked by navigable canals to form an area of interconnected waters covering more than 7,000 hectares. On the canals, sailing boats will require a folding mast in order to be able to pass through locks and tunnels and under bridges.
